ChatGPT already has an opinion about your brand — and your analytics can't see it

Ask ChatGPT "what's the best tool for tracking brand mentions in AI answers?" It will give you a confident, specific answer. It will name products. It will rank them. It will explain why.

Here is the uncomfortable part: that answer already exists for your category, right now, and it either mentions you or it doesn't. You were not in the room. You did not get a click. Your analytics recorded nothing.

The channel your dashboards can't see

For twenty years, "how do people find us" had a paper trail. Search Console showed the queries. Analytics showed the sessions. You could see the funnel.

AI assistants broke that. When a founder asks Claude "which of these three vendors should I trust," the model reads, decides, and answers — often without sending a single click to anyone. The recommendation happens inside the conversation. There is no referrer, no UTM, no row in a report. The decision gets made and you never see it.

So the most important sentence about your product this week might be one an AI said to a buyer — and you have no way of knowing whether it was flattering, wrong, or about a competitor.

Why this is already worth your attention

You do not have to believe AI search will "replace Google" to care about this. You only have to believe that some of your buyers now open ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, or Gemini as step one. That's already true, and it's rising.

Three things tend to surprise people the first time they actually look:

  • The AIs disagree. ChatGPT recommends you; Perplexity has never heard of you; Gemini recommends the competitor you beat on every feature. Same question, four different realities.
  • They cite sources. These models frequently link the pages they leaned on. Those citations are the new "page one" — and they are winnable.
  • They have a sentiment. Not just "mentioned or not," but how. "Solid but pricey" and "the category leader" are very different answers to be losing or winning.

What "looking" actually means

The good news: this is measurable. You can send the real buying questions to each AI, on a schedule, and record who got mentioned, who got cited, and in what tone — then watch it move as you change your content and positioning.

That's what we built BrandBanta to do. It runs your prompts across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity, tracks mentions, citations, sentiment, and competitor share of voice, and shows you the trend instead of a one-off screenshot. You bring your own OpenRouter key, so you're never paying us per scan.

But you don't need us to start. Open one AI assistant, ask it the question your best customer would ask, and read the answer as if you were that customer. Whatever you find — that's your baseline. Everything after is improvement.

The brands that win the next few years won't be the ones that argued about whether this matters. They'll be the ones who looked first.
